New England Conservatory

Nadia, a Music Education App

Art, characters and game design for the New England Conservatory's musical mobile app.

NADIA is an interactive educational music game designed in collaboration with New England Conservatory (NEC) faculty member Andrew Schartmann. The app blends tactile puzzles with ear training and listening skills. Named after famous pedagogue Nadia Boulanger, the app helps players practice rhythm, meter, melody, and chords through short, timed mini-games.

We worked closely with Andrew on the design of the mini-games and created a catalogue of assets including composer characters, instruments, environments and user interface elements.

Rhythm

Players listen to a sample, then fill in the beats of the bar with notation tiles dragged out of the tray. The answer is written in notation rather than chosen from a list, so the tiles have to be read before they can be placed.

Scales

A sample plays, and the player arranges the steps of the scale to match it, dropping numbered tiles into slots. Each slot widens or narrows to the interval it is given, revealing the shape of the scale as it is built.

Meter

Players judge whether a sample is in double or triple meter and tap the tile that matches. New tiles fall in behind every clear, so the board lasts as long as the clock does.
